Wow, Julie Taylor Dog Training has had a jam packed summer! How fun!
Surprisingly, I've had a ton of AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy classes this season.
S.T.A.R.
S - Socialization
T - Training
A - Activity
R - Responsibility
The purpose for this 6-week training program is to gain a training overview for your puppy, while at the same time, teaching the human how to be responsible dog owners. It's a good, solid way to begin your new relationship with your puppy, where you learn how to communicate in a way that is easy for the pup to learn. Some of the areas of training include:
House training
Chewing
Basic obedience
Leash walking
and Recall (coming when called)
This program is designed to be an introductory course on how to get started-off on the right foot with your dog or puppy, rather than an in-depth obedience class.
For that type of training, the AKC offers Canine Good Citizen. This is the 6-week program that follows after S.T.A.R. Puppy, and guides you through a more challenging basic obedience course. It has become the benchmark for what it means to be a good-mannered dog. I encourage all of my dog owners to train at least through this level, which we refer to as CGC, Canine Good Citizen.
Now, let's get you scheduled. Which will it be? STAR Puppy or Canine Good Citizen?
